The Gower Society Talks Programme

In the winter the Gower Society presents talks on subjects related to the conservation, preservation and history of the Lordship. The talks are held in the Museum. In the summer we arrange events.

Sat. 4th October. THE ‘FUTURE' OF OXWICH NATURE RESERVE
An illustrated talk by Reserves’ Manager, Nick Edwards, on the Oxwich Nature Reserve, in particular on the work done to restore the lakes back to open water, fen restoration and the CAN (Communities And Nature) project, an initiative to get Objective 2 money to provide facilities for nature reserves.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 18th October. FOCUSED IMAGES OF AN OUTSTANDING AREA Former Gower Society president Harold Grenfell, Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, author of the 1985 black-and-white Gower Images and the 2007 colour Gower in Focus, presents a selection of his fine photography in this meeting postponed from March. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to purchase a copy of Gower in Focus signed by the author. Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 8th November. THE DROVERS: FROM GOWER TO SWANSEA BAY?  In an illustrated talk, history comes alive as landscape detective Neil Thomas speaks of the drovers, uncovering remains of Grange Lane - a sunken track used in the thirteenth century by White Monks from Neath Abbey through West Cross to the sea.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 22nd November. PUBLICATIONS EVENING Bernard Morris introduces the contents of the 59th volume of the Society’s annual journal Gower, while Harold Grenfell, whose photographs have featured on the cover of so many journals (as well as often enhancing articles inside) will show some of his slides. Gower 59 will be available for purchase, or for members to collect their complimentary copy.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sun. 7th December DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATORY LUNCH
At the King Arthur Hotel, Reynoldston. Send in your form with your menu choice and cheque for £19, before October 31st.

Sat. 13th December. CHAIRMAN/SECRETARY’S EVENING
60 Years in 60 Minutes: In the Society’s Diamond Jubilee year, Malcolm and Ruth Ridge look back on some of its history, with illustrations and questions. Your own anecdotes will be welcome. Join us afterwards for mince pies and a seasonal drink.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 10th January. SWANSEA & GOWER HISTORY, AND THE PEOPLE WHO FOUND OUT
Swansea Museum’s Education Officer Gerald Gabb will give an illustrated talk on the early history of this area. Judging by the first volume of Swansea and its History (2006), expect a wealth of information spreading out in many directions and delivered as always with a light touch that belies the speaker’s authority on his subject.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 24th January. WATERMILLS OF GOWER
Having contributed articles in Gower volumes 42, 47 and 50, and written The Watermills of the Lordship of Gower (published in 2008), Bryan Taylor will give an illustrated talk on the subject that he has so thoroughly researched.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 7th February. SWANSEA BAY....THE COASTAL ROUTE
Following the successful publication of his book of the same title in 2007, Don Strawbridge will give an illustrated talk covering the scenery and history of the route from the Marina to Mumbles Pier. As well as the historic features such as the Mumbles Train and the public parks and gardens, Don will describe some more recent developments.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 21st February. PICTURES FROM GOWER'S PAST
An illustrated outline survey of how artists and photographers have recorded Gower over the last 400 years, by Bernard Morris, the Society’s Hon. Life Vice-President.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 7th March. PRESIDENT’S EVENING
Edwina Hart A.M. has invited Elin Jones, Minister for Rural Affairs and Plaid Cymru’s A.M. for Ceredigion since 1999, to be our guest speaker. Her political interests include planning, agriculture and rural affairs, and she will be speaking on ‘Challenges in the Countryside’.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m

Sat. 21st March. A STROLL ROUND OLD SWANSEA.
A walk through the city centre will be described by Gary Gregor, with reference to such places as the Mackworth Hotel and the Plaza cinema, and such people as Vernon Watkins and Rev. Leon Atkin, followed by a few illustrations of Will Evans’s 1941 paintings of the bomb-damaged area.
Swansea Museum at 7.00 p.m.

Sat. 25th April. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.
