THE GOWER SOCIETY
Guarding Gower for all its worth!
WALKS ON THE GOWER WAY
Some years ago nearly every organisation had its "Millennium Project" and the Gower Society was no exception. Walking has been an activity of the Gower Society since its formation in 1948. It adopted the development of the 'Gower Way' as its project. The Gower Way is a walking route that traverses the length of the old Lordship of Gower. From a former coastguard lookout at Rhossili, now a Coastwatch Lookout, it leads to a fortified medieval outpost at Penlle'r Castell. This guarded the northern approaches to the lordship on Mynydd y Gwair. above the Amman Valley. It is a path approximately 35 miles long. Walking along the full length of the the Gower Way would require the use of transport at one end to avoid a very long walk back to the start. However, many shorter round trips can be undertaken either from a car park or from a convenient bus stop.
Most people will start from the car park or the bus stop at Rhossili. From here there is an easy, fairly level walk out to the start of the Gower Way, marked by stone "0". It is a bit rough like all unpaved paths but most less able people should be able to manage it. You walk down the road past the National Trust Shop, the first of a former row of Coastguard Cottages. Pass through a gate and walk along beside the wall. There are steep cliffs to your right so take care. You will pass an iron Age fort and the remains of a coastguard rocket practicce pole.
The first walk starts from stone "1" on the green by Rhossili ChurchThe second walk starts from the King Arthur or the Cefn Bryn car park
The third walk starts from the Penmaen National Trust car park
The fourth walk also starts from the Penmaen National Trust car park
The fifth walk starts from Knelston but finishes at Penmaen and uses the bus.
We hope to add more walks to this page.
