WALKS ON THE GOWER WAY

Walk 5

[An Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 map in the Landranger Series (No. 159) or preferably a 1:25,000 map in the Explorer Series (Nos. 164) should be used.]

The finishing point will be at Penmaen (Grid Reference SS 533 888) on the A4118 road towards Rhossili and Port Eynon. There is a stop on the bus route from Swansea and places for off road parking. If you are using your car you should park in Penmaen and catch the bus to your start point. The walk described is about 5 miles.

Take the bus to Knelston School. Walk back from the School to find a lane on the left next to Puck’s Hollow and marker 7 (almost opposite the petrol station). Follow the lane and very soon come to a pumping station on the right. Cross the stile beside the pumping station into a field. The large house you can see is Stouthall. Cross the field straight ahead to reach another stile. Cross that stile and follow the stream on your right to another stile. Cross this stile into a large field with houses at the top. Walk up the field with the boundary to your left. You will see a stile at the top of the field. Cross this stile into a narrow often wet lane with a stream on your left. Up the lane another stile leads into Reynoldston Lower Green.

Keeping the Green on your left walk up the road towards the King Arthur and stone 8. Turn left before the King Arthur, (or if you must call in walk back) and turn up the hill on a rough track that crosses a main road near the Post Office. Climb up to a well defined track leading from left to right on the crest of the ridge. Turn right along this track and follow it to the car park on Cefn Bryn. Cross the road carefully to reach marker stone 9.

The Gower Way continues along the left hand track which runs along the ridge. You will pass near an orientation table placed by the Round Table for the Queen’s Jubilee. Pass markers 10 and 11 on the ridge. Just past marker 11 a narrow path leads off to the right with splendid views of the coast. The Gower Way Stone stands near where this path rejoins the main track. Follow the main track down to Penmaen and your car or the bus stop (from the Gower Way Southern Section leaflet).

For a longer walk you could take the bus to Rhossili and follow the directions in the Southern Section leaflet of the Gower Way.
